Is ChaLEAN Extreme Just for Women?
This one’s for the guys out there (as well as the gals who have guys who need to get in shape), particularly the guys who look at the informercials or other ads for ChaLEAN Extreme and say, “Ahh, that’s just for women!”
Well, I’ve got news for you, buster: unless you’re really primed for the over-the-top experience of P90X, ChaLEAN Extreme will - not to put too fine a point on it - kick your butt into shape and reduce you to a quivering blob of protoplasm and growing muscle.
Jan and I have both done our own reviews of ChaLEAN Extreme (Jan’s is here, mine is here), but I wanted to focus here on the male of the species to get you to really take notice of this workout program. I’ll be honest with you: if you pony up your determination to give Chalene Johnson all you’ve got in these workouts - and she demands it - you will see some incredible progress.
One of the things Chalene does as she goes through the workouts is tell you what weight she’s using for each exercise, and she also sometimes asks the other folks in the workout what they’re using. This gives you a good starting point when you first dive into the program.
Now, let me also confess right here that when I started ChaLEAN, a lot of the weights that I was using weren’t much more (and in several cases less) than Chalene was using. Let me tell you, guys, that lady is strong. And she talks to you while she’s doing the exercises, without ever getting out of breath! Even now, with only a week left in the final phase (Lean), she can still kick my butt on some of the shoulder exercises. But I keep my log so I know how much I lifted in the last workout, and keep my form as perfect as I can. And those muscles are growing!
And then, of course, there are the aerobic segments. All I can say is that if you aren’t in good cardiovascular shape by the time you’re done with this program - or at least haven’t made huge strides forward - you’re either dead or you were sitting there watching Chalene and friends and not doing the workouts! The cardio routines are much more challenging than anything I did in the Army, except maybe the stadium runs when I was in ROTC (up and down all the steps in the football stadium at Arizona State University - not fun!). If you’re not already in decent shape, you’ll wind up doing some of the modifications, but you’ll find that those are challenging, too, if you’re putting yourself into it.
So, if you’re not quite ready for P90X, but are looking for something that’s really going to challenge you, don’t be fooled: ChaLEAN Extreme is a fantastic workout for both women and men!
