You hear the phrase “Healthy Eating” every day. You hear it on the news or radio, you read about it in the newspaper, or maybe your spouse has decided that the family has to eat healthier. You know it’s a good idea, so why does it seem like it’s an insurmountable obstacle?

Many people believe that to eat healthy you can only eat salads and fish. There goes all of those big, fat juicy burgers and crisp, crunchy fries. There will be no more big bowls of ice cream or chocolate cake. And what about pizza? Is pizza good for you or not?

Eating Whole Foods - or Clean Eating

Eating healthy is definitely a change of mindset and lifestyle, but it doesn’t have to be painful. There are many changes you can make to your diet that are easy and even delicious. A good, basic place to start is to eat only whole foods. An easy way to think about this, and to shop for these kinds of foods, is to buy things around the outside aisles in the grocery store. This means you will buy things in the produce section, such as fruits and vegetables, in the meat sections, as well as dairy and eggs. These items are arranged along the outside walls in stores because they need the refrigeration units to keep them fresh. It also means that you will be avoiding the processed, manufactured foods that are so bad for your health. I mean, think about it, don’t you think it’s better to eat foods that your body knows what to do with, rather than food that has been created in a factory?

Whole Grains are Good!

Another easy place to make a change is to switch to whole wheat or whole grain items if you haven’t already. Most grocery stores today carry a wide variety of whole wheat or whole grain breads, everything from oatmeal varieties to 12 grain breads. You may say that you don’t like the taste of whole wheat breads. I suggest you try several different kinds. You may find that you really enjoy the taste, flavor and even crunchiness of the whole grain breads.

I also suggest that you read labels. Many foods that we buy - including many types of bread - have some kind of sweetener included, especially high fructose corn syrup or HFCS.  I suggest you read the labels carefully and avoid as much as possible any foods made with HFCS. Buying organic products is one way to easily avoid it, since organic products are made with only natural ingredients. You can also find many kinds of pasta made out of whole wheat or rice flour. I think, and my family agrees, that you really can’t taste the difference between pasta made from white flour and that made from whole wheat. But your body will thank you for the change!

Now What?

Now that you have all of these healthy fruits and veggies, lean proteins, and healthy eggs, what do you do with them? Yes, this does mean you will have to do some cooking, rather than just sticking something in the microwave to heat it up. But again, don’t be overwhelmed by this process.  You can find wonderful, flavor-filled recipes in many different place.
