Eating to Lose Weight with ChaLEAN Extreme (continued)
Yesterday we took a quick look at the ChaLEAN Extreme nutrition plan and why you need to eat the right combination of lean protein, good carbs and fat in order to lose weight. Today let’s look at where I went wrong and how I fixed it.
What I did wrong
So I mentioned above that what I did wrong could be answered in one word - Carbs. And it’s not that I was eating the wrong kinds of carbs because I wasn’t. I was eating too much. Eating too much of the right carbs is still going to be a stumbling block for any diet. (The carbs I’m talking about here are whole grain breads and cereals, for the most part). As you look through the recipes provided in the Food Guide, you will see that some of them contain carbs and some don’t. For example, you have breakfasts that includes wraps or English Muffins, and ones that don’t. Many of the lunches are just salads with protein, but some also have tortillas or wraps. Most of the dinners are starchy carb-free until you get to the Lean month dinners, which add more carbs. At that point, as well as in the Push month, you will want to increase your carbs a bit in order to provide more energy for the more intense workouts. And remember when I mentioned earlier that you will be increasing your calories as your metabolism increases? This is when you’d be increasing it, in the Push and Lean months with the increase in protein and carbs.
What’s important to keep in mind as you plan your meals for the day/week is to not have too many starchy carbs in any given day. So, for the first month during the Burn Circuit, I would recommend keeping the carbs down to 1 or 2 a day. If you feel like having cereal for breakfast, then don’t include any in your other meals for that day. If you know you want to have a Chicken Quesadilla for lunch, then plan on eggs and veggies for breakfast and a lean protein and veggies or a salad for dinner.
I am into my second week of our second round of ChaLEAN Extreme and I have been watching how may carbs I’m eating very closely. I have one carb serving a day. (We are actually following the P90X Portion Plan during this round of ChaLEAN Extreme, but the principles are the same.) One carb serving can be two whole wheat English Muffins, two whole grain waffles, 1 cup baked beans, 1 cup cereal, 1 cup oatmeal, 1 cup pasta, 1 medium potato, 1 large whole wheat tortilla - you get the idea. So the serving size is substantial, but once you’ve had it, that’s your carb for the day. By eating this way, and following all of the other guidelines closely, as well as exercising intensely, of course, I have been losing about a half pound a day this week.
Give this way of eating a try, whether you’re currently using ChaLEAN Extreme or not. I think you will find that the fat will melt right off, as long as you’re being consisten with both the exercise and eating right. Good luck, and let me know how it goes!
