Jan and I went running last night with our twelve year-old son, Samuel. Aside from getting some exercise on a beautiful (if a tad humid) evening, it really illustrated how far we’ve come in our fitness journey since last year.

Last May we all ran in a 5K race hosted by the boys’ school. Jan and I had trained for it for a few months just by running. It was one of those “sofa to 5K” plans that was just our speed. But it was tough: when we started training, we couldn’t run for even a full minute!

To make a long story short, we sucked wind in the race. Literally. We made it, walking part of the way, but Samuel totally smoked us. Zoom! That wasn’t surprising, considering that he plays soccer and is very active physically.

But last night Jan and I were having to hold back for him to keep up, and were running at a pace where our heart rates were hovering around 140. I felt like I could’ve gone on for ten miles!

Talk about a huge difference from last year! And it’s not because we’ve been running like crazy to train - we’ve hardly run at all. It’s just the overall conditioning the Beachbody programs have given us. Running, kayaking - whatever, we’ve got more stamina and strength for anything we want to do.

So, this year’s 5K is coming up next weekend. Samuel, I love ya, dude, but the old parental units are gonna blow your proverbial doors off this time. We’ll be waiting for you at the finish line!
